What to Look for When Checking Gym and Sports Equipment

What do you look for when checking gym equipment?

“afPE wants to ensure that every school is aware of their statutory duty to undertake an annual inspection of their PE and sports equipment…” Association for Physical Education.

In light of this, Sportsafe is proud to be an afPE Approved Partner for the Inspection, Repair and Maintenance of PE and Sports Equipment in Schools. We are one of the “endorsed, reputable contractors whom we (afPE) are delighted to be working in partnership with”.

What do you look for when checking gym equipment?

Safety should be your key focus when checking gym equipment – whether it be looking for damage that could cause an accident or injury, or ensuring the hygiene of shared areas and resources. Even apparently minor equipment flaws can be dangerous in an active gym environment.

Keep an eye on splinters in wall bars; tears in mats; weakened joints in frames and benches; misalignment of treadmill tracks; cleanliness of bars and weights. Daily visual checks are essential, backed up by full professional inspections on a regular basis.
