Choosing the Right Climbing Frame for Your School: Safety, Size & Budget Tips

Climbing frames are more than just a play tool, they are a developmental asset. When integrated into a school’s sports hall, they can support physical development, cognitive growth and social skills. But how do you know what climbing frame is right for you? How can you safely use a climbing frame?

Climbing Frame

There are numerous benefits that climbing frames can offer to children, mainly being in physical, cognitive and emotional development, such as

  • Strengthening muscles
  • Developing fine and gross motor skills
  • Improving balance and coordination
  • Improving problem solving skills
  • Boosting creativity and imagination
  • Promoting social skills
  • Building confidence

However, if your climbing frame is not set up and used correctly, this can cause a safety risk. You can start by ensuring the frame you purchase meets BS EN 1176 standards, which guarantees the product has been tested for durability, material safety and impact zones. Further information on the standard can be found here.

Another risk can come from having a frame which isn’t suitable for your pupils age group. In primary schools, it is critical that you have an appropriately sized frame for ages 4-11, equipment for older or younger users may pose unnecessary challenges or hazards.

Using professional installers for your desired climbing frame is an easy way to give yourself peace of mind when investing for your pupils. Without having a specialist installer, you may miss bolts or critical checks, creating a huge risk for users. Sportsafe engineers are fully equipped to install climbing frames in schools and will be sure to inspect the frame one installed so you can have an official sign off on the apparatus.

Once installed, we come onto the question of whether a safety mat is necessary underneath/surrounding the frame for safe use. According to afPE (Association of Physical Education) “Although it is common practice to see mats at the base of climbing equipment, these mats may have limited potential to reduce the impact of a low-level accidental fall and cannot be considered adequate in preventing head injury and/or concussion.” Therefore, having matting is not a requirement when in use, however if you feel more comfortable using a safety mat, you can do this.

Finding the right fit for your school can be tricky when the market feels so overwhelming, but no worries, I am here to break it down for you and assist you with discovering the best option for your school. We offer three options of climbing frames which are suitable for primary use: Spectrum Triple Climbing Frame, Kaleidoscope Frame and Rainbow Trio Frame. The designs can vary, as well as the materials used to manufacture the frame, for example some use wood and metal, whereas some are metal only. Learn about our options below:

Spectrum Triple Frame

The Spectrum Triple Frame has a space-saving Y configuration allowing the frame to be used in quite small areas to it’s full advantage.

When stored, the frame unit only requires a relatively small wall area. The standard units are 2.97m wide per frame and 3.49m high. The timber units can be fitted with traditional oval bars or brightly coloured powder-coated steel bars. The frame can be either wire or ladder braced (secured) and is also fitted with a rigid connecting link where appropriate.

Kaleidoscope Frame

A very colourful timber frame suited to schools where space is limited. Like the fill-size Spectrum Frame, it is manufactured from high-quality selected timbers, but this version has a colour stain applied, providing a vibrant finish with the wood grain still visible. The frame comprises three gates, incorporating a fireman’s pole, rope ladder with coloured wooden rungs, climbing rope with knots and oval rings – all in addition to the standard ladder sections.

The frame can be used in either Y or T configuration and is ladder braced. Each gate is 2.43m high and 1.83m wide.

Rainbow Frame

A colourful and robust climbing frame suitable for use in key stage 1 and 2 activities. It is constructed with 25mm diameter tubular steel with a powder coating to provide wear and scratch resistance.

The Rainbow Trio Frame can be used in both T and Y configurations and is braced by two steel ladders for extra stability. Each gate measures 2.52m high and 1.83m wide.

We understand budgets can be tight in schools, and making this stretch for a new climbing frame might be tough. Try applying for some funding that is laid out in our Grant Guide, or look into your Primary PE and Sport Premium allowance. There are lots of organisations looking to help you and your pupils, giving you access to shiny, new equipment.

Indoor climbing frames are a fantastic addition to any primary school, enhancing physical education and providing fun, engaging movement opportunities all year long. By prioritising safety, finding the best fit for you and using budget saving tips, you can make a worthwhile investment that supports both health and learning.
