Government Update: £18m Secured for England’s Play Areas

There has been exciting news for youths all over England…

In the recent budget on November 26th, it was revealed that the UK government are planning to release eighteen million pounds to go towards the development of parks across England.

It has been proven that at least 400 parks have closed between 2012 and 2022, causing an increase in child obesity and decrease in the quality of children’s wellbeing and mental health. These closures have been widespread, however have been seen particularly frequently in deprived areas of the UK. As a result of this, the launch of the eighteen-million-pound budget will be focused in those deprived areas that are lacking these inclusive outdoor spaces.

As stated by Play England, a Treasury source said “This funding will breathe new life into play areas across England, creating safe, exciting spaces for thousands of children. It will enrich and empower communities – giving every child a place to play and grow, wherever they live”

Around two million children do not have live within a 10-minute walk of a playground, putting parents with mobility difficulties in an awkward position when it comes to monitoring their children safely, or even allowing them to play at all. Closing this gap and shortening the distance between parks will open new play and exercise opportunities for children which will work towards not only the improvement of health in young people, but also the happiness of the next generation.

Play England’s Executive Director of Play, Eugene Minogue has said “one-off funding will not close these gaps. We urgently need a new national play strategy” implying that a serious change is needed to secure the future of play across the country. These changes in funding will certainly help England take a step forward in their dedication to our future generations.

The application process and important dates for the funding are yet to be released; however we are sure will come in time before April 2026 when the new budget comes into play.
