The Fifty-Fifty takes roughly half the strength out of a skill by running the gymnast through a pulley. That lets a younger or lighter gymnast rehearse the shape and timing of a movement long before they have the strength to hold it unassisted, and it takes a good deal of the physical load off the coach.
