Pickleball & Basketball MUGA – Birchwood High School
The Brief
The project involved the refurbishment and resurfacing of an existing sports court and the installation of a new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) measuring 22m x 17m.
Installation
Preparatory works included the removal of debris and sweeping of the existing surface, as well as the creation of drainage points through the existing court to improve surface water management. A K140 tack coat was then applied prior to the installation of a 30mm thick 6mm Ultiporous Leisure porous surface course across the entire playing area.
To enhance functionality and security, a new 3m high DUO8 rebound fencing system was installed around the perimeter of the facility in Moss Green (RAL 6005). The fencing package incorporated two integrated basketball posts and a single access gate, creating a durable and versatile sports enclosure.
The completed surface was finished with a colour coating system, featuring a Claret (RAL 4004) playing area with a contrasting dark green 1m run-off perimeter. Specialist sports line markings were applied to accommodate one full-size basketball court and two pickleball courts, using contrasting colours for clear visibility and multi-sport use.
To complete the facility, two sets of freestanding Vermont 360 pickleball posts were supplied, including nets and stabilising weights, providing a high-quality and flexible playing environment for users.
Outcome
The completed MUGA provides a modern, durable and versatile sporting facility, enabling year-round participation in basketball and pickleball within a safe, enclosed environment. The new porous surface and improved drainage infrastructure enhance playability and longevity, while the vibrant colour scheme and professional line markings create an attractive and functional community sports space.
