Award-winning Colchester Company Sportsafe UK is marking Leisure Industry Week with a call to parents to leave the car at home and walk their kids to school. The company – which supplies and services fitness equipment to thousands of schools across the UK – says children need more encouragement to take exercise.

Managing Director Jon Neill says, “Fitness is like charity – it begins at home. Children get the best start in life if they’re active, and they do best in the fitness stakes if their parents show them a good example. Our challenge is that, during Leisure Industry Week, we want parents across Essex to leave the car at home and walk their kids to school. It’s just a few minutes out of the day, but it could start a habit that does us all good.

“Of course, it’s not possible for everyone. I understand that. Some kids have to travel a fair way, and some parents have to get straight to work after they’ve dropped the children off, so they have to take the car or public transport. We’re just saying: if you can, give it a go. You might be surprised by how good you feel at the end of the week – and you might even want to carry it on!”

Leisure Industry Week is marked with a big trade fair at the NEC, Birmingham, from 21-23 September, featuring a range of leisure operators including health clubs, theme parks, gyms, play centres and sports clubs – as well as equipment suppliers and servicers like Sportsafe. Jon says, “It’s a big thing in the industry, but we thought it would be fun to get the general public involved this time. And it’s not even a full week – it’s three days, so it’s got to be worth a try!”
