Colchester-based Sportsafe UK has taken on its first apprentice, and plans to recruit three more over the next six months – as well as taking on six qualified engineers. The company needs new blood because it’s bucking the recession with its continuous growth. This year alone, it has renewed 20 contracts and won further work which increases the number of schools it covers from 10,000 to 40,000.

The company manufactures, sells, installs and services fitness equipment, with clients across the UK including local authorities, sports centres and private schools. Its newest recruit, Daniel Mitchell, 18, joined the company on 18th October, and has begun a two-year structured training programme to make him a fully qualified engineer.

Jon Neill, Managing Director of Sportsafe, says, “This is good news for Colchester and the surrounding area. We had been thinking of moving to a more central location in the UK, but have chosen to stay here and open more offices nationwide – in Fort William, Nottingham, Manchester and Surrey so far. We already employ more than 40 people here at our head office, and numbers will increase across the board as we keep expanding.

“The company began in a garage in Great Horkesley in 1996, and we’re now one of the biggest and best known companies in the industry, looking after fitness equipment in thousands of schools across 60 county councils.”
