The Future of School Sports: Upcoming Trends in Physical Education

Once upon a time, Physical Education’ (P.E.) was for primary level pupils and ‘Sport’ was the more serious secondary students. No more! Physical Education does not just stop aged 11+; physical education is complex, it is the backbone of successful sport, and it is for Life.

PE, once regarded as a straightforward discipline focused primarily on traditional sports, is blossoming into a multidimensional field that intertwines health, technology, and holistic student development.

The multiple benefits of regular physical activity and time outdoors for both physical and mental health are well documented – but today’s 3D physical education also incorporates technology to assist improved nutrition, relaxation, motivation and fitness.

In Europe, countries like Germany, France, and the U.K. are witnessing a trend towards gamifying physical education. The market is expected to grow as nations invest in digital platforms to enhance student engagement. Players like Decathlon and Evolve Fitness lead this innovation.

This technology is also opening up a whole new world of access to physical education for those who may have previously been excluded through lack of accommodation for disability, social disadvantage, behavioural problems or unconscious bias of providers. Inclusivity and diversity of provision are key trends in the successful future of school sports.

…there is a growing recognition that pupils’ mental health and wellbeing influence their educational attainment. Importantly, sport and physical activity – provided through the physical education curriculum in alternative provision schools – may offer a viable means to reengage disaffected youth in learning and development.

Hundreds of thousands of pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) are set to benefit from a national programme to improve access to PE and school sports…The Inclusion 2028 programme will work with a network of 50 Youth Sport Trust lead schools to provide expert training to teachers to help them create and deliver lessons that meet the diverse needs of all pupils – including those with physical, sensory, cognitive, communication or social and emotional needs.

What is more, all trends in physical education and its provision are no longer the domain of just the PE and sports teacher; communities and businesses are increasingly involved.

By fostering true partnerships and implementing proactive, sector-wide solutions with key stakeholders, we will empower children and young people with the knowledge, skills, and most critically, the physical health and emotional resilience they need to reach their full potential.

Technology

For Sport: Fitness trackers, action simulators and apps are well-established.  Whether you want to check your heart rate, record your running distances and times, or improve your swing using a simulated on-screen golf course – there is a gadget out there for you and your students.

Downsides can include cost of equipment, isolation of users in activity, need for expertise in supervision, and the over-reliance on data recordings rather than body self-awareness.  However, with proper funding or sponsorship, teacher training and balanced use, technology can give students the opportunity to understand, learn and try sports they would never otherwise have had access to.

In the realm of physical education (PE), Virtual Reality (VR) presents an innovative approach to enhance learning experiences, offering immersive environments and interactive simulations… VR-based interventions demonstrated effectiveness in improving performance, knowledge retention, and adherence to exercise regimens… Moreover, immersive simulations enabled experiential learning, providing students with realistic scenarios.

Equally as important as these ‘sci-fi’ innovations are the core staples for school fitness suites – but even these are also evolving all the time. Fundamental, non-tech basics such as weights Origin Weighted Gym Balls, resistance bands Urban Fitness Resistance Tube – Strong, and aerobic steps UFE Compact Aerobic Step will always be the backbone of a good gym set up.

Combine these with old favourite, now tech-savvy, items such as treadmills and you can create an invitingly modern and effective exercise and fitness space for your students. Add in access opportunities before and after school, at breaktimes and in the holidays and your school academic, mental health and positive behaviour records are bound to improve. What is more, having digital instruction available on some of your equipment can reduce the amount of sports specialist supervision required out of curriculum hours.

In summary:

  • Ensure access to basic, non-tech equipment for fundamental workouts
  • Provide medium-tech equipment to inspire and motivate every student
  • Install, or hire, select high-tech pieces to challenge your serious athletes and competition teams
  • Offer a VR experience to introduce students to new sports they would not otherwise know about
  • Use digital instruction, YouTube videos and online professional trainers to vary sports lesson leadership and free up onsite teachers to observe and help individual students
  • Educate students about using data to monitor their fitness progress
  • Provide quality instruction on tech equipment so that students can become confident independent users
  • Open up your gym, VR resources and access to digital fitness instruction before and after school and in school holidays to maintain consistent, motivated exercise routines

For Physical Education:

As mentioned before, physical education stretches from birth to forever, not just Early Years to Year 6. Grab the innovations, AI and gadgetry with both hands to help your pupils and students to care for their bodies and minds in everything they do. Enabling your young people to take time to understand, appreciate and manage their own bodies, emotions, thoughts and responses can improve their academic performance and general wellbeing. For example, with a quiet environment, furnished by simple mats Standard Gymnastics Mats, you can introduce a range of apps to help support Yoga or Meditation sessions led by a teacher and for independent use outside lessons

Food and nutrition are vital partners to exercise, health and fitness. Apps such as Eat & Move-O-Matic. can help your pupils and students to understand the links between foods and energy so that they can make more efficient and better choices at mealtimes.  Follow this up by providing quality seating and covered areas at break and lunch times so that pupils and students can actually relax or socialise in comfort.

Take away the noisy, stressy canteen environment for actually eating the meal so that the focus can be on enjoying and thinking about the food and associating it with a pleasant experience. This will inevitably help to improve your students’ digestive processes and readiness for activity and learning in the afternoon.

Similarly, sleep is a much underrated resource and not much understood by those of school  has age.

Sleep is an essential function that allows your body and mind to recharge, leaving you refreshed and alert when you wake up. Healthy sleep also helps the body remain healthy and stave off diseases. Without enough sleep, the brain cannot function properly, impairing your abilities to concentrate, think clearly, and process memories.

Although digital technology has much to answer for in terms of disrupting sleep through excessive attention to devices and screens late at night, there is also a wealth of helpful tech out there to get your students into better sleep routines.

In summary:

  • Recognise that physical education relates to all aspects of the school day
  • Help your pupils and students to understand that how and what they eat affects their mental and physical health
  • Practise what you preach. Provide environments conducive to healthy eating and positive social experience
  • Make use of educational, interactive apps to improve your students’ understanding of the power of good nutrition and sleep
  • Combine the basic, practical equipment your school already has with access to AI programmes and exercise apps outside standard PE and sports lessons to enable students to self-regulate their emotions and make better use of the whole school day

Inclusivity and Diversity

Our fast-paced, global society demands that schools prepare pupils to be adaptable and resilient to succeed in their future lives. Nowhere is this more important than on the sports field, pitch or court. Like technology, this is an area of education that is evolving rapidly. Up to date, professional PE and Sport teacher training is, of course, essential – as is a schools’ willingness to be open to adaptation, be proactive in modifications, cater for specific needs and organise parallel provision.

However, there is also an increased interest in school sport by supporting organisations such as the Activity Alliance which provides support for schools and community groups to develop inclusive PE, sport and active recreation for disabled people. Sport England is also at the forefront of standing for everybody, from every background, in every place, having an equal chance to be active and benefit from it. “Our aim is for a sporting system that’s truly inclusive and properly reflective of UK society

On a practical, everyday level, sports and play equipment companies are moving rapidly with the times and ethos to ensure that schools have every possible resource available to use physical education and sport to support inclusivity and diversity. Forget the old chalk on tarmac – there is a wild world of playground markings that have been created to include and inspire every child. Equally, playground installations can now be designed for wheelchair access and with different activities to appeal to different experience and ability levels, whilst both indoor and outdoor sport spaces can be adapted to suit every athlete.

In summary:

  • The ethos of diversity and inclusivity starts in school
  • There is a huge number of associations willing to help schools to ensure every pupil and student has access to quality physical education and sport
  • Keep your eye on the developments in sports and PE equipment to create a bespoke active environment at your school

Communities and Businesses

More than ever before, schools are not isolated establishments. Community and business involvement has been proven to improve student attendance rates and participation in education. If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a community to support a school!

Opening up a school’s sports facilities to the wider community can not only bring in much-needed extra income for the school but it also makes pupils and students feel part of a greater being.  Suddenly, school can become part of family life and parents understand better how the school works. Partnerships and collaboration begin, creating a stronger network of support for the young person. What is more, the physical education provided in school can start to influence a wider audience, giving health and fitness benefits to the whole community.

Similarly, the involvement of local businesses in the sponsorship of school PE and sports facilities creates vital financial links, can increase resources and their quality, and helps to broaden career and integration horizons for students.

In summary:

  • Schools, communities and businesses can be mutually supportive and beneficial
  • Opening up school sports facilities to the community can be financially advantageous for the school
  • Community involvement in a school has been proven to improve student attendance and participation
  • Links with businesses can lead to financial support and better PE and sports facilities for schools
  • Links with businesses can lead to work experience and career opportunities for students

In conclusion, it is clear that schools are excited about opportunities available for their students once they leave school but there is a lot to be done to ensure our future generations are equipped socially, academically, mentally and physically to make the most of these opportunities. At the core of this preparation are physical education and sport. By increasing awareness of trends and developments in technology, inclusivity and business, schools can make sure that they secure the future of sport in education.
